He was always a very unsociable person. While the ancients discussed who had the best wealth, he simply hated this custom, so he did not speak. But ignoring them did not stop them from their incessant attempts to make him unhappy, so he suffered constant abuse. Strange as it was, though, he didn’t seem to mind at all. He hated everyone and everything equally. She didn’t mind it to any great extent, as she spent the day away from home while her father worked in the mine. She loved watching plays with the rest of the village children and also used to frequent the artist’s store to hear new stories about imaginary places. When she arrived home she would take care of all the household chores and wait for her father to return so she could tell him a new story.
Over the years he found a person he did not hate, on the contrary, he idolized her. She was so special to him that he did not decide to devote his whole life to attract her attention in order to marry her. To do so, he embarked on endless subway explorations in search of riches to get her hand, but he never found any. In the end, she fell in love with his constancy, not his luck, and they decided to get married, being happy at last, away from the mockery of the people.
Unfortunately, this happiness ended the moment his firstborn was born, as his wife died in childbirth. That left him with a very young daughter to care for and no one to help him work. The mockery of «the oddball who lost everything he touched» began to grow.
The father no longer had any reason to live other than the pride of shutting the mouths of his neighbors. But unlike them, who had their children as labor, he was alone in the mine, looking to reach unexplored areas full of resources and riches. Over the years he found enough to buy robots to help him with the mining process. But it was still not enough to feel free from the eyes of others.
In addition, her daughter, who was quite an independent child, was as sweet and full of life as her mother. She wanted to explore areas that did not exist for him and interacted with the rest of the town without problems while he worked tirelessly to get back at them. Her existence irritated him, it was like another cruel joke of fate.
But the girl never understood this obsession in the village for mining to the depths. She seemed to be the only one who was interested in knowing what was up there, because no one had ever tried it before. She wasn’t afraid to lift her head to look further up, so, since her father was never home, she started digging upwards.
Over the years, she managed to make her way through the rock until, one day, her pickaxe opened a crack to a new world: the surface. There he spent years carving on the mysterious glowing quartz stones that populated the area. Her most impressive work was a large tree, the only one in the world, on whose leaves she dedicated herself to writing her life as if it were a diary. She wanted her creation to feel accompanied by her, what she never imagined was that her will would give it life, making roots grow the more the bond between them grew.
One day when she was trying to help her father excavate a very deep area, they hit one of the roots of the tree she had carved. The father thought he had finally made the discovery he needed to stop the rest of the village from laughing at him.
The girl, naive, told her father that the piece of quartz was her work. The old man, astonished, asked for explanations, since it seemed like another one of his made-up stories. The little girl, who was already 8 years old at the time, very excited that her work had gone so far, told her father everything that had happened on the surface. The father’s eyes followed the story attentively. But the more they opened, the more the light disappeared in them.
He could not believe that she had stolen the one thing that kept him alive: a victory, a great discovery. How she had made him look like an idiot?! The anger started pouring out of him like a fountain, with all sorts of bad words and reproaches. His eyes were turning blacker and blacker, losing his mind by the minute. With increasingly aggressive movements, he approached his daughter, wrapped his arms around her neck and began to squeeze… and squeeze… and squeeze… choked her to death.
After that, the old man never came to his senses: during the rage attack he literally turned into a mass of hatred that devoured everything it touched. He became an animal whose only instinct was to kill. He became the entity.
It ascended through the underground, sweeping away everything and everyone. His instinct was to go towards that which ruined him completely: the works of his daughter. Once on the surface, almost all the carvings were wiped off the map, all but the tree, his largest, most vivid and strongest-willed work. It defended itself from the entity by generating a great explosion of light, sending The Entity directly to the depths of the subsoil, buried until something or someone allowed it to escape.
